For centuries, native Hawaiians have used the fragrant juice of awapuhi ginger to hydrate skin and hair. Rich in 19 amino acids that hair needs to look and feel its best, the awapuhi plant offers natural nourishment for dry and damaged tresses.
In the early 1980s, our co-founder and renowned hairstylist Paul Mitchell was introduced to Hawaiian awapuhi ginger. Discovering that the gel from the awapuhi flower lathered, he became fascinated by the natural benefits of this unique plant. This inspired a vision that Paul shared with his business partner John Paul DeJoria and our chemist. The rest is history.
In 1983, our co-founders established an off-the-grid farm in Pa'auilo, Hawai'i. Lush with tropical plants, flowers, and fruit-bearing trees, this sanctuary became home to our signature ingredient: awapuhi extract. Two years later, we introduced the original fan-favorite: Awapuhi Shampoo.
All the awapuhi used in our products is still grown and harvested on the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Farm. For over 40 years, the land has been carefully managed by the same family. Each awapuhi ginger plant is carefully harvested using traditional methods. The roots are hand-washed, then dried in a solar drying shed, and ground into a concentrated powder that is added to our products.
A portion of each root is also replanted for the following year's harvest, creating a regenerative cycle. The roots remain dormant in the soil until they grow back in early summer to become the next generation of awapuhi ginger.
The formulas you know and love have a new look with at least 25% PCR* (post-consumer recycled) packaging. Consciously imperfect: each bottle or tube is unique and may vary slightly in color due to the use of recycled material. Celebrate this uniqueness with us as we all do our part to help the planet.
